UCI Road World Championship roads now officially warmed up by the Flanders 2021 Ride Knokke-Heist – Brugge
Saturday 18 September 2021
This morning, around a thousand passionate cycle racing enthusiasts kicked off their own UCI Road World Championships in the glorious sunshine, on the time trial circuit between Knokke-Heist and Bruges. On an almost flat route, the riders discovered the most important parts of the UCI Road World Championships time trial circuit, interspersed with quiet, green roads in Ommeland, Bruges, and a passage under the arch marking the official finish in ’t Zand in Bruges.
Recreational cyclists could start in both Knokke-Heist and Bruges. There they had the choice between the 65-kilometre loop along both World Championship host cities or a single 30-km route from Bruges, or 37 km from Knokke-Heist to the other city. A few brave young riders also took to the circuit on which the next day, the battle will be fought for the elite men’s individual time trial world title.
In the UCI Road World Championship village of Damme, cycling fans could enjoy an extensive supply of sports drinks, muesli bars and sugar waffles. It was the perfect place to take a breather. Those who cycled the longest distance, 60 km, passed this point twice.
Afterwards, the sports enthusiasts could treat themselves to a delicious refreshment in our fan zones on ’t Zand in Bruges and Albert Beach in Knokke-Heist. The happy faces, along with some tired ones, provided a wonderful conclusion to the first day of Flanders 2021. On to the Flanders 2021 Para-cycling Race and the elite men’s individual time trials!
