The Road World Championships are coming to your school!
Thursday 06 May 2021
The 100th anniversary of the UCI Road World Championships is the perfect alibi to let the cycling madness break out in Flemish schools as well and to put cycling and biking in the spotlight. In the run-up to the championships, from 18 to 26 September inclusive, a true schools project has been set up.
In order to involve school children in the World Championships and cycling in general, the World Championships organisers, together with MOEV and Sport Vlaanderen, have developed a series of education bundles. We are also looking for the most cycling-crazy school and MOEV and Sport Vlaanderen have numerous initiatives on offer about cycling and cycling as a form of active travel.
"The race is coming home. With a range of initiatives, we bring the race to the classroom," says Flemish Minister of Sport Ben Weyts. "I am convinced that the Road World Championships and the run-up to them will encourage many children and young people to jump on their bikes. Who knows, they might become the champions of tomorrow."
Educational bundles primary and secondary education
What better way to immerse school children in cycling than with a series of appropriate "cycling classes"? The World Championships organisers and MOEV have put together four bundles, which teachers can use to teach many aspects of cycling and cycling in the classroom.
And that is not all! MOEV, Sport Flanders, the Flemish Foundation for Traffic Science and the Octopus plan have developed other actions around the themes of cycling and cycling as a form of active travel for the school purposes. MOEV offers schools a platform via which teachers can find many practical and fun cycling initiatives.
Most cycling-crazy school
Furthermore, in the run-up to the World Championships, the project is looking for the most cycling-crazy school in Flanders. Professional cyclist Jesse Vandenbulcke and upcoming talent Thibau Nys are the ambassadors of the project. Together with the two World Championships mascots, they explain in five short films the assignments that can make a school the most cycling-crazy school in Flanders: a dazzling World Championships choreo (by bike), a tough World Championships course, an original World Championships move, the most creative mural or drawing on the playground, and the smartest XXL World Championships shirt. As a school, you can choose one assignment or take on several challenges.
