Friday 06 November 2020
After the 2021 UCI Road World Championships had already embraced Keerbergen and Tervuren as official village of the World Championships, the same honour is now due to Damme, Huldenberg and Overijse. The city of Damme is on the route of the time trials, Huldenberg and Overijse on the Flandrien loop in the road races.
All official villages together with the four starting and finishing cities (Knokke-Heist, Bruges, Antwerp and Leuven) play a prominent role in the 2021 UCI Road World Championships. In the run-up to the championships, they will be involved in various promotional moments and will enthuse their inhabitants for the passage of the international peloton on their territory. During the championships (from 18 to 26 September 2021) there will be a fan zone in each official village and the municipality itself will provide a lot of entertainment for the inhabitants.
In Damme all the individual time trials and the Team Time Trial Mixed Relay will be passing by from Sunday 19 to Wednesday 22 September. Huldenberg and Overijse are on the Flandrien loop which on Friday, Saturday and Sunday are part of the road races for the Men U23, the Elite Women and the Elite Men. Some of the key elements of the UCI Road World Championships are situated in those municipalities: Bekestraat, Moskesstraat, S-bocht-Taymansstraat in Overijse and Smeysberg in Huldenberg.
"The fact that the time trials pass through our city is special", says mayor of Damme Joachim Coens. "Our slogan is: Damme, gives time for relaxation, discovery and development. These are also three elements that are reflected in this discipline of cycling".
Mayor Danny Vangoidtsenhoven of Huldenberg: "Races like the Druivenkoers and De Brabantse Pijl: they brought Huldenberg name and fame to many cyclists and hikers. Who, for example, is not familiar with the climb of our legendary Smeysberg? The Road World Championships offer us the opportunity to appreciate our hilly community in a touristic way as well. After the dark corona period, this is a nice perspective for our residents, traders and associations. Something to live up to together!
Inge Lenseclaes, Mayor of the municipality of Overijse and responsible for sports: "Cycling is in the blood of the people of Overijse. For decades, our community has been the setting for the Druivenkoers and the Vlaamse Druivencross. The arrival of De Brabantse Pijl has also been organised several times in Overijse. The women's final of De Brabantse Pijl also took place this year in Overijse. The Tour de France even passed in the S-bend. Our sloping landscape is not only useful for growing grapes, but also provides challenging climbs during the various cycling races that pass in Overijse".
